COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankans are protesting in front of the President's Office for the 11th day demanding the immediate resignation of the President, Prime Minister, and the Government.
The Occupy Galle Face protest was launched on the 9th of April 2022, after a series of island-wide cluster protests against the mismanagement of the economy, and corruption in the government.
Sri Lanka is mired in an unprecedented economic crisis brought on by mostly domestic factors: Years of foreign-debt-fueled government spending, badly timed tax cuts, and policies that hurt crop yields have hollowed out its foreign reserves.
The island nation of Sri Lanka is in the midst of one of the worst economic crises it’s ever seen.
It has just defaulted on its foreign debts for the first time since its independence, and the country’s 22 million people are facing crippling long-hour power cuts, and an extreme scarcity of food, fuel, and other essential items such as medicines.
