COLOMBO (News 1st): D. A. Dharmasena of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has been apppointed as the new Chairman of the Gangawata Korale Pradeshiya Sabha in Kandy, of which the United National Party (UNP) held power earlier.
The meeting to elect a new Chairman for the Gangawata Korale Pradeshiya Sabha was held on Tuesday (Jan. 18) under the patronage of Menaka Herath, the Commissioner of Local Government of the Central Province.
Governor of the Central Province, Lalith U. Gamage recently appointed the Deputy Chairman of the Gangawata Korale Pradeshiya Sabha as the Acting Chairman, in accordance with the Local Government Act, considering that Subhash Yatawara, the Former Chairman of Gangawata Korale Pradeshiya Sabha to have abandoned service, following the defeat of the budget at the Pradeshiya Sabha twice in a row.
News 1st correspondent reported that nine members of the SLPP, two members of the SLFP, one member of the JVP and one member of the UNP were present at the Pradeshiya Sabha yesterday, while eight members of the UNP including Former Chairman Subhash Yatawara did not attend the meeting.
D. A. Dharmasena's name was nominated for the post of Chairman by Chaminda Karunaratne of the SLPP and it was seconded by M. Chamikara of the party.
According to the News 1st area correspondent, the new Chairman had to enter his office by breaking the lock as the Former Chairman had locked the Chairman's office and taken the keys with him.
