COLOMBO (News 1st); A group of wildlife officers managed to flee a charging elephant when they attempted to reach the pachyderm and administer treatment, assuming it was sick.
The incident was reported from Hasalaka, when wildlife officers were informed that a lone elephant was seen swimming slowly in the Ulpathagama Wewa in Hasalaka.
As it remained stationary for a while, wildlife officers assumed it was sick and moved closer to it using a small boat to administer treatment.
However, the wild elephant at the sight of the approaching men, was startled and decided to charge at the boat.
The quick thinking of the wildlife officers changed the situation, which could have turned ugly.
