COLOMBO (News1st): China won the first gold medal at the 2020 Olympics Games held in Japan's capital of Tokyo today.
Sportsmen and women representing Sri Lanka took part in various games.
Sri Lanka's Tehani Egodawela was placed 499th in the qualifying round of the 10 metre Air Rifle event held at Asaka Shooting Range this morning.
Anikka Gafoor finished second in one of the preliminary rounds of the women's 100 metres butterfly event with a time of 1 minute and 5.33 seconds.
The top 16 swimmers with the best timing will qualify for the Semi-Finals of the event. Anikka Gafoor finished 32nd in the preliminary rounds.
Niluka Karunaratne lost the first badminton game against Chinese Taipei player WANG Tzu-Wei by 2:0 today.
Meanwhile, China clinched the first gold medal at this year's Olympics. This was in the 10-metre female rifle shooting event.
