COLOMBO (News1st): The UN Core Group on Sri Lanka is due to table a resolution against Sri Lanka at the ongoing 46th UN human rights council sessions today.
This would be the sixth resolution tabled before the UN human rights council since 2012 on promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka.
The resolution, 46/1, revolves around several matters including accountability for human rights abuses in Sri Lanka and preserving evidence over the matter.
According to the resolution seen by News 1st, the sponsors have added a clause calling on Sri Lanka to fulfil its commitments on the devolution of political authority.
The sponsors have drawn emphasis on the Northern Provincial Council while calling on Sri Lanka to conduct elections and ensure the operations of provincial councils.
Meanwhile, the Core Group has also inserted a paragraph requesting the UN human rights chief to present an oral update on Sri Lanka at the 48th UNHRC sessions.
The initial draft of the resolution had only called on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to table a written statement on Sri Lanka at the 49th UNHRC sessions.
