Colombo (News 1st); President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Monday (22) said laws should be viewed as guidelines for government officers and when laws are enforced, it should be done with a practical perspective.

Addressing the inauguration of the ‘Surakimu Ganga’ (‘Protect the Rivers’) Project, the President said the government officers must always bear in mind that they serve the people, adding there is no use in enforcing the law if it is not done with a practical perspective. "There is no point in protecting the law, if the people are being inconvenienced, said the President. The President went on to note that when the people expressed their issues to him, as President he needs to provide a solution to the issues. The President said his comments on returning agrarian lands used by farming communities for generations that have been taken away from them for certain flaws, were misquoted as he permitted the clearing of forests. "The village folk never destroy forests, they protect the forests instead," said the President.
