COLOMBO (News1st): The US, is among the countries that have requested to strengthen the wording in the resolution against Sri Lanka at the UN human rights council.
During a meeting on March 1 and 2, the UN's Western Europe and Other Group (WEOG) had called for the further strengthening of the language in certain paragraphs of the resolution.
Among the WEOG countries that participated in the session are Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Liechtenstein and the United States.
These countries had taken a coordinated position in asking for strengthening the wordings of some paragraphs of the draft resolution that is to be tabled before the UN Human Rights Council.
The US is reported to have asked for the inclusion of word ‘extradition’ in the paragraph which calls for prosecution of those responsible for alleged crimes.
However, China voiced its support for Sri Lanka in the Council, condemning the naming of individuals and allegations levelled against Sri Lanka for human rights abuses.
