COLOMBO (News 1st): The State Ministry of Water Supply hopes to provide drinking water for 400,000 families that do not have access to clean drinking water at present, in the coming four years, ministry officials said on Tuesday (Jan. 26).
The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has so far provided water for 51% of the Sri Lankan population, S.G. Wijayabandu, the Secretary to the State Ministry of Water Supply said.
According to Secretary S.G. Wijayabandu, there are difficulties in providing access to drinking water for certain areas, as a result of geological locations; thereby, the Department of National Community Water Supply will provide water for such areas through wells and other water supply projects.
According to government data, around 4500 Community Water Societies have been established in the country so far.
