COLOMBO (News1st): The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) staged a protest on Tuesday near the Presidential Secretariat against the sale of the Colombo Port's East Container Terminal to an Indian company. "The people who govern our country at the moment are brokers who sell off our national resources," JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said during the protest. He pointed out that the government has repeatedly engaged in moves to hand over the terminal to India's Adani Group of Companies since the visit of the Indian external affairs minister. K.D. Lalkantha, the president of the National Trade Union Centre, urged the President to voice his objection against these moves as well. "You have to come forward and promise the people that the East Container Terminal will not be snatched away from the Sri Lanka Ports Authority," Lalkantha insisted. He warned that protests will take place across the country if swift action is not taken to resolve the issue.
