JAFFNA WAR MEMORIAL TO BE RECONSTRUCTED

COLOMBO (News 1st); A foundation stone was placed at the Jaffna University for the re-construction of the memorial which was demolished at the premises and led to much controversy in Sri Lanka.
Reports suggest, the university students also called off the hunger strike launched against the destruction of the memorial.
The War Memorial at the Jaffna University was constructed in memory of those who died in the final battle, in the three-decade-long war.
However, on Friday (08) a decision was taken to remove the memorial citing it as illegal construction and this led to an uneasy situation in the north of the country.
University students launched a hunger strike and a harthal was underway in the north against the removal of the memorial.
