Eastern Province braces for heavy rains; schools closed this week

Colombo (News 1st); All schools in the Eastern Province will remain closed from Wednesday (02) to Friday (04) due to inclement weather as Cyclone Burevi is to Cross Sri Lanka's east tomorrow.

Anuradha Yahampath, the Governor Eastern Province said the decision was taken after the Meteorological Department issued a RED ALERT warning the depression area in the south-east Bay of Bengal has concentrated into a deep depression southeast to Trincomalee at 0530hrs today (December 01).

It is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours.

Further, the system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Batticaloa and Point-Pedro around Wednesday (December 02) evening/night.

The Governor of the Eastern Province said in order to facilitate those affected by the inclement weather, schools will be used as relief camps.

She said a special program is already in place to save people from the cyclone, heavy rainfall and floods.
