CEA announces week for collection of E-Waste

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Central Environment Authority has announced a week for the collection of electronic waste, across the island, officials said. "The e-waste collection will be held islandwide, from 5th to 10th October," Ajith Weerasundara, the Director of the Chemicals & Hazardous Waste Management Unit told News 1st on Wednesday (Sept. 30). The e-waste collection programme is conducted together with the Department of Posts. Accordingly, Weerasundara requested the people hand over their e-waste to post offices, from 5th to 10th October. Following the conclusion of the collection week, plans are underway to facilitate the recycling process and proper disposal, the Central Environment Authority noted. "Components such as plastic, copper, iron, and glass from e-waste will be recycled in Sri Lanka, while electronic grids and other harmful elements will be exported for recycling," Ajith Weerasundara further said. According to Weerasundara, disposal of harmful elements of e-waste is not permitted in Sri Lanka, at present.
