Colombo (News 1st);  14 people including candidates who contested the August 2020 General Election from the Samagi Jana Balavegaya were issued notice by the Court of Appeal to appear in court on the 05th of November.

Among those who were issued notice is SJB Matale District MP Rohini Kumari Kavirathna.

The order was made by a bench comprising Court of Appeal President A. H. M. D. Nawaz and Justice Sobitha Rajakaruna after considering a petition filed by Ranjith Aluvihare who also contested the 2020 General Election from the Samagi Jana Balavegaya.

Ranjith Aluvihare requested the Court of Appeal to issue an order to recount the preferential votes of those who contested from the Matale District under the SJB ticket.

In his petition, Ranjith Aluvihare claimed Rohini Kavirathna was elected as an MP at the election and he was short of 416 preferential votes from what she secured.

Ranjith Aluvihare's petition notes, his preferential votes reduced as a result of fraudulent activity that took place at multiple counting centers.

The District Returning Officer, The Deputy District Returning Officer, Chief Counting Officer, Chairman and Members of the National Elections Commission were named as respondents in the petition as well.
