Colombo (News 1st); The COVID (Elections) Regulations 2020 submitted by the Health Secretary pertaining only to Election Meetings, Canvassing, and Election Offices was approved by the Attorney General.
Coordinating Officer to the Attorney General, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne speaking to News 1st said the Secretary to the Ministry of Health had sent a draft of the "COVID-19 - Elections Regulations 2020" to the Attorney General on the 15th of July 2020.
The Chairman of the National Elections Commission on the 27th of June in a letter to the Health Secretary had noted it is an issue for officers and voters to be called to polling station in the absence of the regulations being imposed.
The NEC Chairman in the letter had urged the Health Secretary to gazette the said regulation for a free and fair election to take place.
The regulations are pertaining only to Election Meetings, Canvassing, and Election Offices.
