Police urged to probe manhandling incident of journalist at court complex

Colombo (News 1st); The Director General of Government Information has requested the Acting Inspector General of Police to conduct and immediate and impartial investigation into an incident where a photo-journalist was manhandled by a person identified as a police officer inside the Hultsdorf Court Complex on Friday.

"On Friday media outlets reported on an incident where a journalist who was legally present at the court complex was obstructed from performing his duties by a person identified as a Police Officer and was later manhandled by the said Police Officer," said Nalaka Kaluwewa, the Director General of Government Information in a letter to the Acting IGP C. D. Wickremeratne.

The letter stated the journalist was in possession of an Official Media Identification Card issued by the Government Information Department and according to state assurance everyone is responsible to assist and not hinder the duties of a journalist carrying such an identification.
