PC convicted of soliciting a bribe from lorry driver

Colombo (News 1st) - A police constable of Mattakuliya Police was found guilty on two indictments for soliciting a bribe of Rs.25,000 from a lorry driver, has been sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court Justice Pradeep Hettiarachchi today (September 19). In addition to the sentence, a fine of Rs.50,000 has been ordered on the condition that if he fails to pay the fine, another prison term of 18 months would be added to the sentence. It was reported that 8 indictments were filed against the suspect on soliciting a bribe from the lorry driver who had been transporting pharmaceutical products. The police constable had been on duty at Kadirana Road Block, Mattakkuliya on June 12th 2016, when he encountered the lorry driver. The High Court reportedly has dismissed 6 of the 8 indictments filed against the defendant before issuing the verdict.
