Colombo (News 1st): The Meteorological Department predicts that the prevailing showery condition in the South-Western part of the island will further deteriorate until August 30th.
It added that fairly strong gusty winds up to 50kmph are also likely over the island. Further, the department predicts, showers or thundershowers to occur at times in Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-Western provinces.
It went onto note that heavy rainfall of about 100-150 mm is likely at some places particularly in Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle, and Matara districts, while, fairly heavy rain above 50mm is likely at some places in Kurunegala and Kandy districts.
The department added that several spells of showers will occur in Anuradhapura, Mannar and Jaffna districts. Further, it noted that showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva and Eastern provinces and in Polonnaruwa district after 2.00 pm.
The Met Department requested the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.
On another note, the Meteorological Department stated that on the apparent southward relative motion of the sun, it is going to be directly over the latitudes of Sri Lanka from 27th of August to 07th of September. Accordingly, the nearest towns of Sri Lanka over which the sun is overhead today (29th) are Thirukeswaram, Vaddakkandal, Palaimoddai, Parakramapura, and Kallarawa at about 12.12 noon.
