42 die in accidents during past five days

Colombo (News 1st): Police said around 42 people have died due to accidents from 6 am on April 13th to 6.00 am today (April 17). The number of accidents during the 24-hour window ending at 6 am today, stands at 12 resulting in the death of around 22 people. Madurupitiya One person was killed in an accident that took place in Madurupitiya along the Anuradhapura - Wilachchiya main road. News 1st correspondent said the accident occurred when a motorbike and a lorry collided on to each other. The 45-year-old pillion rider of the motorbike was killed in the accident. The injured rider of the motorbike has been admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching hospital. Police have arrested the driver of the lorry. Weligama One person was killed when a motorbike veered off the road this morning in Kotawila, Weligama. Police said 3 people were travelling on the motorbike at the time of the accident. The deceased was a 19-year-old youth of Weligama. Hatton Two people have been severely injured in an accident close to the Batalgala bridge in Hatton. This was as a result of a head-on collision of a lorry and a motorbike. The two injured have been admitted to the Dickoya Hospital. Enderagala A 23-year-old woman was killed and another was injured in an accident that took place in the Enderagala area along the Dambulla - Habarana main road last night. Police said the accident had taken place when 2 motorbikes collided. Kargiswatte One person was killed after he fell off a bus in Kargiswatte, Uva Paranagama. A tense situation arose following the accident. Police said that officers from the Uva Paranagama, Welimada and Udupusellawa Police stations were called to intervene. The driver of the bus has been arrested.
