Executioner's post gets 45 applications

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Prisons states that around forty-five applications have been received for the post of executioner. A senior officer at the department noted that the applications are being reviewed. The interview process will follow soon. The department also noted that it is not necessary to extend the deadline for applicants. Recently, the Prisons Department was considering recruiting a foreign national to this position. The capital punishment was last imposed in Sri Lanka in 1976 at the Welikada prison, on an individual named "Chandradasa". The list of names of the inmates who are sentenced to death over drug related charges with the approval of the Attorney General was handed over to President Maithripala Sirsena on January 25th. According to the list, 17 inmates have been sentenced to death and the restoration of the gallows is in the process.
