Motor accidents claim 10 lives in 24 hours

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Ten deaths caused by motor accidents were reported from various parts of the country within the last 24 hours. Wennapuwa The most fatal accident was reported from Nainamadama, Wennapuwa this morning (January 20). The accident occurred when a motor vehicle collided with a lorry transporting fish at around 3.20 am near the Nainamadama bridge along the Chilaw- Colombo main road. Nine people who were heading back from a wedding had traveled in the motor vehicle at the time of the accident. Six of them lost their lives in the accident. The deceased were identified as 36-year-old Pradeep Lowood, 32-year-old Suranga Sampath, 34-year-old Sanjeewa Fernando, 38-year-old Janith Fernando, Manju Fernando, and Bandara. The other three in the motor vehicle had sustained injuries and were admitted to the Negombo hospital. Two of the injured were later transferred to the National Hospital. Meanwhile, the police noted that a firearm manufactured in Italy was also found at the site of the accident. Thambarawila A 35-year-old died in an accident that took place in Thambarawila along the Kurunegala - Negombo main road. Police said the person died when the motorbike he was travelling on toppled and was run over by another motor vehicle. Wellawaya junction An 18-year-old died after he met with a motor accident in the Wellawaya junction along the Wellawaya - Ella road last evening (January 19). The motorbike on which the 18-year old was travelling in had collided with a van carrying prison officials. The deceased was identified as Seneth Tharuka, a resident of Warunagama, Wellawaya. Koswetiya, Pallebadda A driver of a three-wheeler that knocked on to a lorry parked in the Koswetiya area in Pallebedda along the Embilipitiya - Ratnapura road at around 5.15 am today (January 20) died in the accident. The deceased was identified as a 42-year-old resident of Thimbolketiya and a father of two. Two women and two children who were in the three-wheeler at the time of the accident were admitted to Embilipitiya and Pallebedda hospitals due to injuries. Gampaha Meanwhile, a 25-year-old died after the motorbike he was travelling on veered off the road in Gampaha early this morning (January 20). The deceased was identified as a resident of Gampaha. Thudella, Ja-Ela Three people including an eight-year-old child died when a train collided onto the motorbike the victims were travelling on. The incident occurred at the railway crossing in Thudella, Ja-Ela last evening (January 19). Locals charge that the gatekeeper of the railway crossing had not reported for duty due to a salary issue.
