Colombo (News 1st) - Governor of the Central province, President's Counsel Maithree Gunaratne assumed duties today (January 11), at the governor's office in Kandy. Secretary to the governor Bandara Thennakoon, Mayor of the Kandy municipal council Kesara Senanayake and family members of the new Governor were present at the ceremony. Speaking at the occasion, Governor Gunaratne remarked that the image of the Prime Minister was not hung on the walls of his office alongside the images of the President and the former Governor. He called on the officials of the Governor's office to ensure that a portrait of the PM is also hung within the office. He noted that while he may have had political differences with Ranil Wickremesinghe, he should be given the due respect as the Prime Minister. Gunaratne stated that he is accountable only to the President and if he is doing anything wrong, the public would take to the streets. The new Governor stated that he would discharge his duties in a proper manner without being intimidated by anyone.
