Remembering Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero

Colombo (News1st): The third commemoration of the late most venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero which was marked was held at the new Town Hall in Colombo this evening (November 08). Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, members of the clergy, politicians and several other dignitaries were present. The commemorative speech was delivered by Professor Jayadeva Uyangoda, an award-winning academic in Political Science at the University of Colombo. He stated that the country is heading towards a head on collission between the executive and the legislature. Adding that this should not be taken lightly. He noted that the country is in dire need of moral intervention by its leaders at this critical time in order to prevent this political crisis from turning into a bloodshed. Convenor of the National Movement for Social Justice Professor Sarath Wijesooriya speaking at the event said that they need to fix this confusion inside the parliament. He urged the 225 members of parliament not to behave in a disrespectful manner on the 14th. He believed that the issue could be solved in a civilized manner. Prof. Wijesooriya said when parliament convenes on the 14th, if Mahinda Rajapaksa is capable of showing a majority he should be allowed to serve as PM while if he does not the opposite should take place. Meanwhile another commemorative ceremony for the Most Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero was held at the Kotte Nagaviharaya today. Speaking at this event (Dr.) Wijeyadasa Rajapaksha said that they lost ven. Sobitha Thero at the most crucial time in the country. He said that they believed that if  the thero was alive the country could have shifted more towards a socio, religious and political change.
