COLOMBO (News 1st) - Tear Gas and Water Cannons were fired on protesting university students twice this afternoon.
The protest was launched by the Inter University Students Federation against the suspension of students studying in the South Eastern University and against a statement made by Minister of Higher Education Wijeydasa Rajapakshe.
Heavy traffic was reported in Town Hall and Ward place due to the protest.
Attempts made by the protestors to enter the premises of the University Grants Commission in Ward place were unsuccessful.
Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protestors but, a few minutes later they gathered at town hall again. Even after using water cannons and tear gas twice the protesters continued to remain at Townhall.
