COLOMBO (News 1st): The Sri Lanka Army marked its 77th anniversary today with a ceremony at the Army Cantonment in Panagoda, honouring its history of service and sacrifice while recognising schools that have contributed the highest numbers of personnel currently serving in the Army.
The ceremony was attended by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Nilantha Premaratne as the Chief Guest.
In a first for the Tri-Forces, schools were recognised for their contributions to the Army based on the number of former students currently serving as Officers and soldiers.
Awards were presented in four categories: male Officers, female Officers, male soldiers and female soldiers, with three schools recognised in each category.
Ananda College in Colombo secured first place in the male Officers category, while Devi Balika Vidyalaya in Colombo topped the female Officers category.
Kebithigollewa Central College in Anuradhapura ranked first in the male soldiers category, while Kegalu Balika Vidyalaya in Kegalle secured first place in the female soldiers category.
The anniversary celebrations began with a Guard Turnout by troops of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry, followed by the hoisting of the Army Flag, the singing of the Army Song and two minutes of silence in remembrance of War Heroes who died defending the country.
The 2026 Army Day parade featured 78 Officers and 652 Other Ranks representing 25 regiments, along with Colour Squads.
During the ceremony, seven Army personnel received Army Commander’s Commendation Badges in recognition of their distinguished service over the past year, including acts of bravery and selfless service during national emergencies.
Addressing the gathering, the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Premaratne, paid tribute to fallen and wounded War Heroes, serving personnel and their families, while reflecting on the Army’s legacy of service and sacrifice.
He said the anniversary marked not only a celebration of past achievements but also the beginning of a new era focused on transformation, modernisation and strengthening the Army’s capabilities.
The Commander of the Army emphasised the importance of developing a soldier-centric, technologically equipped and professionally competent force capable of meeting future challenges.
He urged all ranks to uphold discipline, leadership and professionalism while embracing innovation and modern warfare capabilities, guided by the Army’s motto, “Serve to Lead”.
