COLOMBO (News1st): A request has been submitted to the President to extend the tenure of the Special Presidential Commission to Investigate Coal Procurement transactions by a further two months.

The Commission’s Secretary, D. V. Bandulasena, said its current term is scheduled to end on the 16th of October.

So far, the Commission has recorded evidence from more than 70 individuals in connection with the transactions. The process of recording evidence is expected to conclude next week.

Last week, the Commission also issued notices to 18 individuals, asking them to present their views on identified irregularities in coal imports and procurement.

Those issued notices are required to submit their representations to the Commission within two weeks of receiving them.

The Special Presidential Commission was appointed by the President to investigate all coal transactions in the country and uncover any instances of fraud and corruption.
