Cabinet Approves Sri Lanka–South Korea Criminal Cooperation Pact

COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea are set to strengthen cooperation in criminal investigations and legal affairs after the Cabinet of Ministers approved the signing of an agreement on mutual legal cooperation in criminal matters.

According to the Cabinet decision, approval had previously been granted at a Cabinet meeting held on November 11, 2023, for the signing of an agreement between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea to enhance cooperation in criminal justice matters.

However, despite the earlier approval, the agreement was not formally signed by the two countries.

The proposed agreement is expected to create a framework for both countries to assist one another in criminal investigations and legal proceedings.

Authorities say the arrangement will facilitate the exchange of judicial documents, the collection and sharing of evidence, and other forms of mutual legal assistance required for criminal cases.

The Cabinet of Ministers has now approved a proposal submitted by the Minister of Justice and National Integration to proceed with the signing of the agreement between Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea.
