COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka's mineral resources sector is set to play a larger role in driving economic growth and export earnings under the country's new export-oriented National Mineral Policy 2026, following high-level discussions chaired by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The discussion, held yesterday, brought together representatives of the Sri Lanka Mineral Sands Association (SLMSA) and officials from the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau to examine the future direction of the country's mineral industry and its contribution to national development.
The meeting focused on the exploration, extraction and value-addition of mineral resources, with extensive attention given to measures required to utilise Sri Lanka's mineral wealth more effectively in support of economic growth and export expansion.
Participants also discussed strategies to strengthen domestic manufacturing industries linked to the sector through infrastructure development, incentives for investors and the promotion of research and development initiatives.
According to the President's Media Division, considerable attention was given to attracting both local and foreign investment while addressing longstanding challenges affecting the industry.
Among the key concerns raised were difficulties encountered by investors when dealing with state institutions.
The meeting also reviewed shortcomings identified under previous policy frameworks and considered reforms necessary to ensure the mining industry operates in a more productive and sustainable manner.
President Dissanayake emphasized the importance of maintaining transparency throughout the investment process, particularly when attracting investors to the sector.
He also highlighted the need for stronger coordination among all relevant institutions to ensure effective implementation of policy objectives and the smooth functioning of the industry.
