Scorching Conditions Hit Multiple Districts; Thousands Depend on Emergency Water Supply

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka is facing mounting challenges from prolonged dry weather, with authorities warning that 12 districts could be affected as drought conditions continue to intensify across several parts of the country.

Deputy Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply T.B. Sarath said districts including Polonnaruwa, Monaragala, Hambantota, Batticaloa, Vavuniya and Kurunegala are among the areas expected to experience the impact of the prevailing dry conditions.

He stated that efforts are already underway in coordination with relevant authorities to ensure affected communities receive the necessary assistance. The Deputy Minister also emphasized that measures are being taken to meet the water requirements of residents in vulnerable areas.

According to the Disaster Management Centre, the dry weather has already affected 81,865 people from 25,628 families across 23 Divisional Secretariat divisions in seven districts.

The Centre further noted that drinking water is currently being distributed to 72,153 people from 23,048 families in 20 Divisional Secretariat divisions as authorities continue relief operations in drought-affected regions.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology has warned that the heat index, which reflects the temperature felt by the human body, could reach levels that require attention in several areas today.

The department said parts of the Eastern and North Central Provinces, as well as the districts of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Monaragala, are likely to experience elevated heat levels.

Health and weather authorities have advised outdoor workers to remain adequately hydrated, consume sufficient water, and take regular breaks when necessary to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

The public has also been urged to wear light-coloured, lightweight clothing when outdoors and to take precautions against prolonged exposure to the sun as Sri Lanka continues to grapple with a combination of drought conditions and rising temperatures.
