Police Uncover Alleged Accomplice In Murder of Backhoe Saman's Mother

COLOMBO (News 1st); A 21-year-old suspect has been arrested for allegedly aiding and abetting the fatal shooting of the mother of organized crime figure and drug trafficker Bako Saman (Backhoe Saman), police said.

According to police, the suspect, a resident of Udahakada in Middeniya, was initially arrested by officers attached to the Middeniya Police on August 19 while in possession of heroin.

Police said the suspect was subsequently produced before the Walasmulla Magistrate’s Court, which granted permission for him to be detained and questioned until yesterday.

Investigators revealed that during questioning, evidence emerged indicating that the suspect had allegedly provided assistance and support in the murder of Bako Saman’s mother.

Police said the suspect was later produced before the Walasmulla Magistrate’s Court and has been remanded until September 2 pending further investigations.

The victim was shot on August 12 at around 6.00 p.m. when two unidentified individuals arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

She suffered critical injuries in the attack and later succumbed to her wounds after being admitted to hospital.

Bako Saman, identified by authorities as an organized criminal and drug trafficker, is currently being held at the high-security Boossa Prison.
