COLOMBO (News1st); A project using new technology to construct mud ponds has been launched to meet the water requirements of national parks during the dry weather.

The Department of Wildlife Conservation stated that the mud pond project is being implemented under the guidance of Professor Rangika Halwatura of the University of Moratuwa.

The department noted that under this initiative, ponds can be built rapidly and at a low cost.

Construction of these ponds has already been completed in the Wilpattu, Yala, and Horowpathana national parks.

Meanwhile, the Department of Wildlife Conservation stated that water supply to animals affected by water scarcity in national parks is being carried out using 25 solar-powered water pumps.

The department added that bowsers are also being used as needed to supply water to national parks severely impacted by the dry spell, including Yala, Wilpattu, Bundala, Kumana, Maduru Oya, Kaudulla, and the Horowpathana National Elephant Holding Grounds.
