COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Akkaraipattu Mayor Athaullah Ahamed Saki has been remanded until September 1 after being produced before the Akkaraipattu Magistrate's Court in connection with an investigation into an alleged rape incident dating back to 2021.

The investigation relates to allegations that a female employee of the Akkaraipattu Municipal Council was sexually assaulted inside the former mayor's office.

The incident came to light following a complaint made to police after the woman was hospitalised in July following an attempt to take her own life.

According to police, the 32-year-old woman told investigators that she was allegedly raped by the suspect in 2021 and subsequently subjected to further sexual assaults on several occasions after being threatened and intimidated.

The suspect, Athaullah Ahamed Saki, is 43 years old and is the son of former minister A.L.M. Athaullah.
