Sri Lankan Student Arrested in Japan Over Fatal Stabbing of Fellow Sri Lankan

COLOMBO (News 1st); An 18-year-old Sri Lankan national has been arrested in Japan on suspicion of murder after allegedly fatally stabbing a fellow Sri Lankan student in Nagareyama City, Chiba Prefecture.

According to Japanese police, both the suspect and the victim were international students residing at the same accommodation.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, when the suspect allegedly stabbed the 21-year-old victim in the abdomen with a knife.

Police said the suspect subsequently contacted emergency services by calling 119. The victim was rushed to hospital for treatment but was later pronounced dead.

Investigators questioned the 18-year-old Sri Lankan student who remained at the scene and subsequently arrested him after he admitted to stabbing the victim.

According to Japanese media reports, the two men were acquaintances.

Police quoted the suspect as stating that he "snapped" after allegedly being subjected to derogatory remarks relating to sexuality, having his mother insulted and being physically assaulted.
