Rs. 8.8 Mn Compensation Case Against Shasheendra Returns to Court

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Colombo High Court today ordered that the case filed against former State Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa and two other accused be taken up again on September 28.

The matter was called before Colombo High Court Judge Raveendra Premaratne.

When the case was taken up, former State Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa, former Acting Director General of the Office for Reparations Sepalika Saman Kumari, and Keerthi Bandara Kotagama appeared before court.

The case has been filed over allegations that compensation amounting to Rs. 8.85 million was obtained by exerting influence on officials of the Office for Reparations following the destruction of a building and other property that had allegedly been constructed unlawfully on land belonging to the Mahaweli Authority in the Sevanagala area during the Aragalaya period.

The alleged offences are said to have occurred between November 27, 2023 and May 29, 2024, and have been instituted under the provisions of the Anti-Corruption Act No. 9 of 2023.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption filed the indictments before the High Court on June 19.

A total of 10 charges have been filed against the accused, while the prosecution is expected to call 30 witnesses and present 38 documents as evidence during the trial.

The case is scheduled to be taken up again before the Colombo High Court on September 28 as proceedings continue.
