COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Education Minister and former United National Party General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has been remanded until August 18.
The order was issued after the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) arrested the former minister and produced him before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court.
Kariyawasam was taken into custody over allegations that, during his tenure as a Senior Adviser to the President, three of four employees recruited to his staff had been deployed at a fuel station owned by him, while the remaining employee had allegedly been paid without being assigned duties at the office allocated to the position.
According to the Bribery Commission, the estimated loss caused to the government amounts to Rs. 2,768,836.14.
