Unrest Reported From Mahara Prison: Police Deployed For Security

COLOMBO (News 1st): An unrest situation has occurred among a group of inmates at the Mahara Prison.

Police Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler, stated that the Police Special Task Force and the police have been deployed to the location.

The police suspect that the unrest was caused by a group of inmates addicted to drugs.

Meanwhile, Minister of Justice, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara, stated that a fire has also been reported during the unrest inside Mahara Prison.

The Minister also stated that a group of inmates has climbed onto the roof there.

He further stated that the Commissioner General of Prisons and a team of officials have been dispatched to the site to take necessary measures to bring the situation under control.

He said that security around the exterior of the prison has been strengthened.
