Navy Teams Deployed To Track Floating Containers Off Colombo Coast

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Sri Lanka Navy has deployed teams to monitor 17 containers that fell into the sea approximately 17 nautical miles west of the Colombo Port.

Navy Spokesperson Commander Chaminda Walakuluge said that naval vessels have been deployed to monitor the sea area and locate the containers.

No information has been received so far regarding the sighting or recovery of the containers.

The Department of Fisheries stated that, due to prevailing sea currents, the containers are likely to drift towards the coastline, from Beruwala through Negombo to Puttalam.

The Department has advised all multi-day and small-scale fishing vessels operating or travelling in these areas to remain alert and exercise caution.

Fishermen who observe any floating containers are requested to immediately inform the Fisheries Department’s radio communication centres or the officials at the nearest fisheries harbour.
