COLOMBO (News 1st); The Colombo High Court today sentenced eight individuals to death after finding them guilty of murder and related offences over a deadly incident that occurred nearly three decades ago.
The death sentences were handed down by Colombo High Court Judge Buddhika Sri Ragala.
Seven of the accused who had been charged in the case were present in court when the judgment was delivered.
The Attorney General had filed indictments against the accused over the killings of Hewa Batagodage Kusumawathi and Velayutham Udayakumar, as well as causing injuries to several others, during an incident that occurred on or around September 21, 1997, in the Tharawatta area within the Colombo judicial zone.
Court proceedings revealed that the crimes had arisen from a dispute that escalated into violence.
Following the conclusion of the trial, which was conducted in the absence of one accused, Judge Ragala ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven the charges against the defendants beyond reasonable doubt.
Accordingly, the Colombo High Court imposed the death penalty on all eight convicted individuals.
