COLOMBO (News 1st) - Sri Lanka Police said 1,431 people have died in road accidents during the first six months of this year.
A total of 1,362 fatal accidents have been reported during this period.
Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Traffic and Road Safety Division, W. P. J. Senadheera, said motorcyclists and pedestrians have been among the most affected groups.
Accordingly, 491 motorcyclists, 486 pedestrians, 96 passengers travelling on motorcycles, and 98 cyclists have lost their lives in road accidents.
Police highlighted reckless driving, speeding, and driving under the influence as the main causes behind these accidents.
DIG Senadheera said traffic operations are continuing across the country, and strict legal action will be taken against drivers who violate traffic regulations.
He further stated that authorities are paying close attention to complaints received via WhatsApp from passengers regarding drivers who engage in reckless driving.
