COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lankan mountaineer Johann Peries has achieved a long-awaited milestone after successfully summiting Mount Denali in Alaska following years of setbacks, injuries, and two previous failed attempts.
Johann Peries reached the summit of North America’s highest peak, standing at 6,190 metres, at 7:35 p.m. on June 17, 2026.
The ascent was completed on his third attempt on Denali, widely regarded as one of the most challenging and unforgiving high-altitude climbs in the world.
The 2026 Denali climbing season has been described as one of the most challenging in recent years.
According to expedition tracking data from mountain historian Alan Arnette, Denali typically sees between 1,000 and 1,100 climbers annually.
Peries’ achievement carries symbolic weight within his broader mountaineering journey.
Known as the first and only Sri Lankan to undertake the Seven Summits challenge, he has spent more than a decade pursuing the goal of climbing the highest peak on each continent.
With Denali now completed, he has successfully summited six of the seven mountains, leaving only Aconcagua in South America remaining.
