COLOMBO (News 1st) - The mandatory regulation to wear seat belts when commuting on the expressway will be re-enforced from Saturday, 20 June onwards.
Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety, W.P.J. Senadheera, stated that the seat belt requirement will apply to all vehicles using expressways.
A gazette notification making the wearing of seat belts compulsory on expressways was issued by the Minister of Transport in September 2025.
The regulation remained in force until March 2026.
Subsequently, following public requests, authorities granted a three-month period to allow vehicle owners to install seat belts.
The grace period is set to expire tomorrow, with full enforcement resuming from Friday.
