COLOMBO (News 1st); England launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Croatia 4-2 in a thrilling Group L encounter packed with attacking brilliance and dramatic momentum swings.
The Three Lions made an early breakthrough when captain Harry Kane converted from the penalty spot in the 12th minute to give England the lead, after his initial effort was saved but retaken following a VAR intervention.
Croatia responded strongly and levelled the match in the 36th minute through Martin Baturina, who delivered a brilliant strike to bring his side back into contention.
England regained the advantage just before halftime, as Kane struck again in the 42nd minute with a powerful header, completing his brace and restoring the lead for his side.
However, Croatia refused to back down and equalised once more deep into first-half stoppage time, with Petar Musa finding the net in the 45+5 minute to ensure the game was level at 2-2 heading into the break.
England returned from halftime with renewed intensity and took control of the match almost immediately. Jude Bellingham scored in the 47th minute, just moments after the restart, to give England the lead for the third time in the match.
Despite Croatia’s efforts to respond, England dominated much of the second half, creating multiple chances while maintaining defensive discipline.
The victory was sealed in the 85th minute when substitute Marcus Rashford added England’s fourth goal, calmly finishing to secure all three points and cap off a commanding performance.
