Four Electoral Models Under Review for Provincial Council Elections

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The National Election Commission says it has submitted a report containing its observations on possible methods for conducting Provincial Council elections to the Parliamentary Select Committee appointed to study the matter.

Chairman of the National Election Commission R.M.A.L. Rathnayake stated that it has been discussed before the committee to hold Provincial Council Elections under four models. 

The four systems include conducting elections under the previously implemented Provincial Council electoral system, Holding elections under the same system with provisions to enhance women's and youth representation, Implementing the Provincial Council electoral system that was previously halted in Parliament due to issues related to constituency delimitation, Conducting elections under a new system formulated on the basis of updated delimitation reports. 

Accordingly, the National Election Commission has submitted recommendations on these electoral models to the Parliamentary Select Committee which is tasked with recommending the electoral system the Provincial Council elections should be held.

The Commission added that the report also includes estimates of the time required to carry out election-related proceedings, including the calling of nominations, should an election be announced under any of the proposed systems.
