Delegation of the United Nations Torture Prevention Subcommittee Arrives in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment & Tourism says the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka today (15).

The delegation is expected to remain in the country until the 24th of June.

Following Sri Lanka's entry to the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT) in December 2017, The United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture conducted its first visit to the country in April 2019.

The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has been designated by the Sri Lankan Government as the Responsible Preventive Body under the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture.

During the visit, the four-member UN delegation is expected to hold discussions with senior officials from relevant government ministries, departments and institutions, as well as representatives of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission and members of civil society.
