July 31 Set for Rulings in Easter Sunday Negligence Trials Against Hemasiri & Pujith

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar today fixed July 31 as the date to deliver the verdict in the case filed by the Attorney General against former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando.

The case has been instituted under charges including criminal negligence and dereliction of duty for failing to prevent the Easter Sunday terror attacks despite receiving prior intelligence warnings of an imminent threat.

The trial was taken up before a three-judge bench comprising Priyantha Liyanage, Viraj Weerasuriya, and Thilakarathne Bandara of the Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar.

During proceedings, Counsel Chaminda Atukorale, appearing on behalf of the accused, concluded his oral submissions.

After considering the submissions presented, the bench announced that the verdict in the case will be delivered on July 31.

Meanwhile, the hearing of the case filed by the Attorney General against former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, also over alleged criminal negligence linked to the Easter Sunday attacks, concluded last Friday.

Accordingly, the High Court Trial-at-Bar bench ordered that the verdict in the case against Pujith Jayasundara will also be delivered on July 31.
