COLOMBO (News 1st); Pre-trial proceedings in the money laundering case filed against Yoshitha Rajapaksa, the youngest son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, were held today before the Homagama High Court.
The case was taken up before High Court Judge Krishanthi Amaratunga.
Yoshitha Rajapaksa faces charges over the deposit of Rs. 17 million into a personal bank account, which authorities claim falls under provisions of money laundering.
During the hearing, counsel appearing on behalf of Rajapaksa made a request to the court to lift the existing overseas travel ban, citing an urgent and essential need for foreign travel.
In response, the presiding judge stated that the travel restriction could be relaxed under specific conditions. The court indicated that if a close relative’s passport is submitted along with that individual standing surety, permission for overseas travel could be considered.
Following the submissions, the court adjourned the case until July 30, when further proceedings are expected to continue.
