COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Colombo Crimes Division says that Osman Gunasekara, alias 'Gampaha Osman' who was arrested last night, will be detained for questioning in connection with ongoing investigations of the murder of Ganemulla Sanjeewa.
Police stated that the suspect was arrested in the Sri Bodhi Road area of Gampaha as part of the investigation into the killing of Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathna, alias Ganemulla Sanjeewa.
On February 19 last year Ganemulla Sanjeewa who had been produced from prison for a court hearing was shot and killed inside the premises of the Colombo Magistrate’s Court No. 5.
The attack was carried out by an individual who had entered the court dressed as a lawyer.
Investigations have revealed that the suspect is allegedly involved in planning and conspiring the crime with organized criminals based overseas, as well as facilitating the murder by providing a firearm.
He is also accused of aiding and abetting the killing and unlawfully possessing a foreign-made repeater-type firearm, 10 rounds of live ammunition, and two magazines without a license.
Police further stated that the arrest was made based on information obtained from other suspects already in custody under detention orders in connection with the case.
The suspect is a 69-year-old resident of the Gampaha area.
