CAA Imposes Over Rs. 89 Million Fines on Traders for Consumer Law Violations

COLOMBO (News 1st) - According to the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), fines exceeding Rs. 89 million have been imposed on traders who violated consumer protection laws during the first four months of the year 2026.

Fines were issued after the Authority initiated legal action against the traders who violated consumer protection rules and regulations. 

From January through the end of April, investigation officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority have carried out 7,334 raids across the island.

The highest number of raids was reported from the Kurunegala District, with 654 operations.

A total of 519 raids were carried out in the Colombo District.

The Consumer Affairs Authority also stated that 511 raids were conducted in the Puttlam District, while 502 raids took place in the Kandy District.

During these operations, special attention was given to the quality and pricing of goods used by consumers in their daily lives.

Authorities said they closely inspected the quality and safety of essential grocery food items such as rice, sugar, biscuits, soft drinks, bottled drinking water, as well as various cosmetic products and electrical appliances available in the market.
