COLOMBO (News 1st); Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said his visit to Colombo marks the beginning of a renewed and forward-looking partnership between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, following high-level discussions with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
President Muizzu described Colombo as a city reflecting the shared history, resilience and friendship between the two nations.
The two leaders agreed to elevate cooperation across key sectors, including trade and investment, health, defence and security, education, youth and sports development, fisheries, the environment and social development.
President Muizzu said several important agreements were concluded during the visit, strengthening collaboration in areas such as higher education and training, archiving cooperation, health, defence, youth and sports development, and tourism.
Emphasising implementation, President Muizzu said the focus going forward would be on delivery, ensuring that the agreements signed translate into tangible benefits for the people of both countries.
Economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions. President Muizzu expressed appreciation for the contribution of Sri Lankan nationals to the development of the Maldives, while also acknowledging the presence of the Maldivian community in Sri Lanka. He said both countries were committed to expanding trade and investment flows, creating a more enabling and investor-friendly environment, and unlocking new business opportunities.
He also said discussions included concrete initiatives such as the potential establishment of a Bank of Maldives presence in Sri Lanka and the introduction of premium Maldivian fisheries products to the Sri Lankan market. At the same time, the importance of addressing the trade balance was highlighted in order to ensure a more balanced, equitable and mutually beneficial economic relationship.
President Muizzu said education and youth empowerment remain central to Maldivian national priorities, and that the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in higher education, vocational training, skills development for future industries, and institutional partnerships and knowledge exchange.
As island nations, President Muizzu said the Maldives and Sri Lanka share a common future linked to the Indian Ocean. He reaffirmed a shared commitment to sustainable fisheries management, protection of marine resources and enhanced maritime security cooperation, while noting the Maldives’ deep appreciation for Sri Lanka’s support through joint exercises, training and capacity-building initiatives.
Climate change was also a key focus of the discussions, with President Muizzu describing it as an existential threat to both countries. He said both nations reaffirmed their commitment to stronger international advocacy, joint environmental initiatives and collective action to build climate resilience.
President Muizzu said the visit marked the start of a new and dynamic chapter in Maldives–Sri Lanka relations, with a firm commitment to deepening the partnership, advancing regional cooperation, and promoting peace, stability and shared prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.
