COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Chairman of SriLankan Airlines, Nishantha Wickremesinghe, who was arrested in connection with a corruption investigation, has been released on bail after being produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today.
Wickremesinghe was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and subsequently presented before court.
He is accused of instructing officials to settle fuel bills belonging to the then Minister of Civil Aviation using funds from SriLankan Airlines, while allegedly persuading officials to act in violation of relevant circulars.
According to the allegations, fuel expenses incurred by the minister between 2011 and 2015 were paid using SriLankan Airlines funds.
As a result of these actions, the state is said to have incurred a loss exceeding Rs. 2.85 million.
