COLOMBO (News 1st) - Under the theme Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows World Water Day is being celebrated today aiming the reduction of the inequalities faced by women and girls amid the global water crisis, while also recognizing their vital contribution to water management.

More than 2.1 billion people around the world still lack access to safe drinking water.

According to United Nations, over 3 billion people globally depend on water sources across national borders to meet their daily water needs.

A total of 153 countries share rivers, lakes, and other water sources with neighboring nations.

Environmental organizations highlight that nearly half of the world’s population faces severe water scarcity at least once every year.
